Baby Doe’s Clothing: Denver Fashion Photographer

The September Trendsetter for Her Life Magazine is one of my favorite to date. We’ve had a lot of fun photographing the fashion spread each month but this one we kept so simple and relaxed that I don’t think the afternoon could have been any better. For the September issue we worked with Baby Doe’s Clothing out of Golden Colorado. Besides the fact that they carry some really nice clothing for women, the owner Nancy is such a sweetheart! It was so nice to have her there for the shoot that day right in the heart of downtown Golden. I LOVE shooting in Golden so it was perfect that she wanted to incorporate the town into the photos. Our models Heather and Tina were so awesome to work with as well! We wanted this shoot to be very relaxed to fit the style of clothing and picked two ladies who had beautiful smiles. We knew we wanted to have several images with the two models paired together so tried to find girls that looked like they could be friends and sure enough the two got along great- you’d never know they just met that day! It was nice to not have to carry around any lighting equipment this time- just used natural light with a little help from a simple bounce to get that nice catchlight in the eyes for a few photos. If you are looking for a great place to shop in Golden for women’s clothing you MUST stop in Baby Doe’s! The September issue of Her Life Magazine is on the website now so check it out if you haven’t already!

It’s New to Me: Her Life August Trendsetter

It’s been a busy couple of months and I can’t believe it’s already September! Where the heck did the summer go? We’ve got a bunch of blogging to catch up on so check back frequently over the next week or so for several posts from the past two months.

A few months back we photographed the August Trendsetter for Her Life Magazine up in Evergreen for a furniture consignment store called It’s New to Me. Trying to come up with a way to photograph this shoot was not an easy task. We knew that we needed to keep the focus of the shoot on the furniture but also wanted to make sure that it remained a “fashion” piece at the same time. Adding to the difficulty of the shoot was that we needed to photograph in the store and the store had LOTS of inventory in a small space all covered with price tags. Let’s just say the final images had more photoshop than most any shoot we’ve ever done trying to remove all those price tags! We opted to make the shoot have a little bit of a “dark” feel to it hoping that it would keep the images from looking too commercial like you’d see in a furniture ad and look more like a fashion piece that it was intended to be. Our model Christa from Access World Talent did a great job for us and was wonderful to work with! We had a great time despite the small work space and the shop has some really cool stuff as well as a very sweet owner who we were so glad we got to meet and work with. If you’re in the market for buying some “new” furniture make sure to check them out in Evergreen! Here’s some of our favorite images from the day including those that made it in the August issue.

Courtney: Modeling in Golden Colorado

I love getting to photograph model portfolios! Especially when the model is my cousin:-)It’s hard to imagine that my little cousin who was four foot something when Michelle and I got married is now almost as tall as me! Courtney has been interested in the whole fashion world for a few years now and has even done some designing too. She decided recently that she’d like to try to the whole modeling thing out and it was perfect for her to come to us to start a portfolio. We figured Golden was a good meeting place to get three different looks for our shoot and it turned out great. Her sister Laura (also my cousin) came along to do hair & makeup for the photos and she did awesome! We had a ton of fun and I think Courtney has a few images to begin a solid portfolio. I can’t decide if the black & white “Guess-inspired” pics are my favorite or the last ones we took at night in a small little garden with lighting to make it look like it was daytime. If you’re a model and want to start or update your portfolio contact us to set up a session- rates start at $400 for a half day shoot with 3 looks! Contact me at 303.912.8156 or dusty@volkelimage.com. Here’s some of my favorites from our day with Courtney & Laura.

Here are a few more things coming to the blog soon!

Christen + Michael: Day 2 Lake Erie Beach

While I loved the photos we got the first day with Michael & Christen in downtown Erie, I LOVE the photos we got the second day when we headed out to Lake Erie. These definitely rank up there in my all time favorite images I’ve ever taken and will definitely be added to our website very soon! The day combined two of my very favorite things: natural lighting and photographing at the beach! Okay technically it’s not a beach in the ocean sense but Lake Erie is HUGE so between the wind, the sand, and the beautiful color of the water it definitely felt like we were at the ocean (minus a few degrees or so). We headed out about noon that day. Yep, cloudless sky and shooting at noon- that’s what comes from learning to photograph in Colorado with harsh sunlight year round. The first part of the session we treated much like an engagement/couple shoot. We took photos of the two of them having fun, walking along the beach and of course we had to include the world’s cutest puppy, Dolce! For the last part of our shoot we took inspiration from the Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Guess Ads… which by the way if anyone has any connections to said companies we have two gorgeous models and a very willing photographer who would be more than happy to work with them haha:-)The last several images were some of my very favorite of the whole trip. In fact, I think I’ve decided we need to move next to a beach somewhere- I could get used to shooting images like this everyday!!

Christen + Michael: Day 1 Erie Fashion Portraits

A couple of weeks ago Michelle and I had the chance to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania to spend a few days with her brother and sister-in-law. Neither of us had ever been really anywhere in that area of the country so that also made the trip pretty exciting for us. Michael & Christen flew us out to Buffalo where we got to see Niagara Falls on the other side of the border and then we headed to Erie for the next few days to spend some time relaxing and taking some photos for the two of them. It was a really fun trip and we had such an amazing time! So sad to come back home:-(We spent two days photographing in various locations in Erie. The first day we started out our shoot at The Crooked I– a local bar in downtown Erie, PA. The idea behind this shoot centered around a couple meeting in a bar. This whole shoot was photographed with two little portable flashes and a hand made snoot to direct the light using a brochure we found in the bar- pretty amazing what you can do without all the big equipment we normally use! For the second group of photos we got to utilize the loft area upstairs from the bar. The second and third floor was pretty much like shooting in an abandoned building- something we don’t have much of in Denver so it was great to get to use a space like that. These were more “romance novel” type images- something I think we accomplished well! The last section of photos we headed outside. The clouds started coming in and the temperature was dropping (as was the sun) but we found a couple of great locations to shoot before we were all too tired and hungry to go further. Loved the single pics we got of each of them outside the warehouse! Here’s some of my favorites from our first day with Christen & Michael. Stayed tuned for day 2 coming soon!!
