Courtney: Modeling in Golden Colorado

I love getting to photograph model portfolios! Especially when the model is my cousin 🙂 It’s hard to imagine that my little cousin who was four foot something when Michelle and I got married is now almost as tall as me! Courtney has been interested in the whole fashion world for a few years now and has even done some designing too. She decided recently that she’d like to try to the whole modeling thing out and it was perfect for her to come to us to start a portfolio. We figured Golden was a good meeting place to get three different looks for our shoot and it turned out great. Her sister Laura (also my cousin) came along to do hair & makeup for the photos and she did awesome! We had a ton of fun and I think Courtney has a few images to begin a solid portfolio. I can’t decide if the black & white “Guess-inspired” pics are my favorite or the last ones we took at night in a small little garden with lighting to make it look like it was daytime. If you’re a model and want to start or update your portfolio contact us to set up a session- rates start at $400 for a half day shoot with 3 looks! Contact me at 303.912.8156 or dusty@volkelimage.com. Here’s some of my favorites from our day with Courtney & Laura.

Christen + Michael: Day 2 Lake Erie Beach

While I loved the photos we got the first day with Michael & Christen in downtown Erie, I LOVE the photos we got the second day when we headed out to Lake Erie. These definitely rank up there in my all time favorite images I’ve ever taken and will definitely be added to our website very soon! The day combined two of my very favorite things: natural lighting and photographing at the beach! Okay technically it’s not a beach in the ocean sense but Lake Erie is HUGE so between the wind, the sand, and the beautiful color of the water it definitely felt like we were at the ocean (minus a few degrees or so). We headed out about noon that day. Yep, cloudless sky and shooting at noon- that’s what comes from learning to photograph in Colorado with harsh sunlight year round. The first part of the session we treated much like an engagement/couple shoot. We took photos of the two of them having fun, walking along the beach and of course we had to include the world’s cutest puppy, Dolce! For the last part of our shoot we took inspiration from the Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Guess Ads… which by the way if anyone has any connections to said companies we have two gorgeous models and a very willing photographer who would be more than happy to work with them haha 🙂 The last several images were some of my very favorite of the whole trip. In fact, I think I’ve decided we need to move next to a beach somewhere- I could get used to shooting images like this everyday!!

Christen + Michael: Day 1 Erie Fashion Portraits

A couple of weeks ago Michelle and I had the chance to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania to spend a few days with her brother and sister-in-law. Neither of us had ever been really anywhere in that area of the country so that also made the trip pretty exciting for us. Michael & Christen flew us out to Buffalo where we got to see Niagara Falls on the other side of the border and then we headed to Erie for the next few days to spend some time relaxing and taking some photos for the two of them. It was a really fun trip and we had such an amazing time! So sad to come back home 🙁 We spent two days photographing in various locations in Erie. The first day we started out our shoot at The Crooked I– a local bar in downtown Erie, PA. The idea behind this shoot centered around a couple meeting in a bar. This whole shoot was photographed with two little portable flashes and a hand made snoot to direct the light using a brochure we found in the bar- pretty amazing what you can do without all the big equipment we normally use! For the second group of photos we got to utilize the loft area upstairs from the bar. The second and third floor was pretty much like shooting in an abandoned building- something we don’t have much of in Denver so it was great to get to use a space like that. These were more “romance novel” type images- something I think we accomplished well! The last section of photos we headed outside. The clouds started coming in and the temperature was dropping (as was the sun) but we found a couple of great locations to shoot before we were all too tired and hungry to go further. Loved the single pics we got of each of them outside the warehouse! Here’s some of my favorites from our first day with Christen & Michael. Stayed tuned for day 2 coming soon!!

Her Life Magazine: Mrs Colorado + Soignee Elegant Attire

I’m a little behind in getting this post up with the start of our busy season but am finally getting caught up in blogging. This shoot goes back to March for the May fashion spread in Her Life Magazine. We had so much fun with this one- not only did we have some really cool clothes to work with but we also had the chance to photograph Janell Ames, Mrs Colorado 2011! What caught our eye about the clothes available at Soignee was the retro 20’s-40’s look of the clothing. The shop carries many other styles as well but these particular items matched perfect with the overall theme we were going for- a seamstress from the early/mid 1900’s. If you live in DTC area you have to check out this boutique! All the unique hats, purses, and props were all courtesy of the shop which made for a perfect setting for the shoot. The owner, Diane, is such a sweet lady and has some really great items available in her store. These photos are a few of my favorite images from the day including the ones you can find in the May issue.

Denver Fashion: Her Life Magazine April Trendsetter

One of my favorite things about working with Her Life Magazine each month is the opportunities it has provided us to expand our portfolio and do things we’ve never done before. April’s issue was very much a first for us. When we heard that the trendsetter would be featuring a local lingerie boutique, Chelsea of London, we weren’t exactly sure what to think considering that it’s not a subject we are used to photographing. After spending some time coming up with a theme for the shoot though we were confident it was going to turn out great and in the end I think we got some great images. Our idea was essentially a business woman getting ready or coming home from work pairing business casual attire with the lingerie from the boutique. The stuff from the boutique is definitely more high end so we wanted to make sure the images were sexy (but still tasteful) so we used more dramatic lighting to create the perfect atmosphere to achieve that look. We had a great time and really enjoyed working with Valerie & Candace from Donna Baldwin Talent. Thank you both so much for modeling for us! Also a big thank you to the Hotel Monaco for providing such an awesome room for our shoot!

Joann Model Portraits: Denver Junkyard

In some places of the country abandoned buildings and salvage yards may be in plenty of supply but for some reason Denver apparently isn’t a fan of leaving things unkept. Off the top of my head I can think of less than a handful of abandoned buildings in the area and when it comes to utilizing them for photography well I’m not sure if I could even name one that would be possible to even get into (not even to attempt illegally trespassing into). When Joann contacted us with her idea of photographing in a junkyard we didn’t have any idea that finding one to use would be just about as impossible as finding an abandoned building- but fortunately not entirely impossible. We were so excited when we finally found a salvage yard that was kind enough to allow us to use their property for our shoot. Joann is just getting her start into the modeling world and after working with her just one time I have to say that she is a real natural. She’s not only beautiful but a very sweet person as well- we were so glad we had the opportunity to work with her! Joann’s sister and husband also came along for the shoot and we had a great time with all of them- even got a few shots of Joann and her husband together! It was a fun day, although a bit muddy, but we got some great shots for her portfolio and even took one with the cutest junk yard cat who followed us around all afternoon. Here’s a few from our day.

VIP Photography Workshops: Headshots

I’m not exactly someone who was thrilled to go to school. Went to high school because I had to and the same with college. So when I jump at the chance to actually “learn” something that says a lot about me. Well, give me a chance to learn something photography related and I’m there! Back in September I heard about a small workshop that was put together by the folks at VIP Photography Workshops. The workshop was focusing on headshots- something I really haven’t done much of so I signed up. Mark Alison instructed the class and it was nice to learn a few new things. The class was a little different than I thought it was going to be. Rather than using flash for the indoor shoot we used continuous light and a bounce. For non photographers that may not sound that interesting but when it comes to lighting, the source matters. It was a fun learning experience and nice to walk away with a new way to use lighting. Here’s just a few pics I took from the workshop- not too bad for my first attempt. Thanks to Mark Alison for teaching the class and the girls from VIP Models who modeled for us that day.
